24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”
As leaders in our home, we must examine everything about our lives and our family to be sure we are on the right track. That includes knowing that we have solid foundation. If the leader does not have a solid foundation that leaves the rest of the family in vulnerable situation.
I remember my Dad telling a story about a new Sergeant that came in while he was in the Army stationed in Korea. This guy was straight out of the classroom with no field experience at all. After several run-ins with this Sergeant he abruptly informed him that if they ever went to battle together, he would be the first person my Dad would shoot. Not a great thing to say to a commanding officer, but the point was clear. I do not trust your leadership ability with my life!
How many of our families are struggling with that same thought but afraid to say it? It is our responsibility to be self-aware and examine ourselves. When you are having your “Father-Son” chats with God, ask him.. Where do I need to improve? Where are the cracks in my foundation? Why am I hemorrhaging in certain situations? Ask the hard questions!! That is the only way to get real answers. Now that you are asking the hard questions you will start to see the answers. Just like home improvements, you fix one thing at a time. If you are running around trying to work on four projects at the same time, none of them get done right.
I want to encourage you to look at your foundation. What is your foundation as a leader? The first step is having a daily conversation with God, your Father, Creator and King. Beyond that we also need to consider, as a leader, am I following the code of conduct that Paul gave to Timothy in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 for leaders or overseers. Click on the scripture and read it for yourself, but here are a few items to consider: Am I above reproach? Am I faithful to my wife with my eyes, heart, thoughts and words? Am I temperate? Do I show self-control in situations that could set me off? Continue through this verse and examine yourself. If you are not going to be 100% honest, this is of no value. I challenge you to be critical in your examination and then begin to work on those areas. If you do not know where to start, seek Godly counsel from a Pastor or Leader that you trust. You have to get your foundation solid before helping others.
Once you start fixing that foundation you will feel great. With a solid foundation built on God and His word, there is nothing that will destroy your house. It may get shaken, but it will not be destroyed.
Fix your foundation, secure your family then help others to do the same when you are healthy mentally, spiritually and emotionally.
